The Bay Area has always been a place of creative tension and radical possibility. Long before it became the epicentre of the digital revolution, it was the beating heart of America's counterculture, where artists, poets, and rebels reshaped the boundaries of creativity.
Is counterculture in 2027 boomer nostalgia? Can it genuinely become a new model in a region where the art system has been pulverized by tech? Are we recalling a bygone era, or seeing a new model reborn?
The Further Triennial emerges as a bold necessity. Confronting a Northern California ecosystem in deep transition, this decentralized network of over eighty non-profit organizations abandons traditional spectacle to prioritize Art Thinking, proximity, and shared questioning. It is a deeply local manifesto with a universal provocation, driven by a shared desire to build a sustainable, creative future.
When the Triennial concludes, we will finally see if this collective effort has successfully pioneered a lasting, collaborative model for the next generation. Refresh will study this new event closely, bringing together a carefully curated selection of exhibitions, essays, and artists to document this turning point in an independent collector’s edition.
